Dishwalla
US alternative rock band Dishwalla made something of a startling entry into the recording industry when they appeared alongside much more celebrated acts on the Carpenters' 1994 tribute album If I Were A Carpenter, before they had even released a single. Their contribution, a version of "It's Going To Take Some Time", alerted several record labels to their presence, but unbeknownst to them Dishwalla were already signed to A&M Records. Originally comprising George Pendergast (b. Santa Barbara, California, USA; drums), Scot Alexander (b. 10 December 1971, Santa Barbara, California, USA; bass), J.R. Richards (b. 30 April 1972, Santa Barbara, California, USA; vocals/guitar) and Rodney Browning (b. Santa Barbara, California, USA; guitar), the band formed in Santa Barbara in 1991, and spent three years locked together in a tiny rehearsal space before hitting the Los Angeles club scene. Keyboard player Jim Wood (b. Santa Barbara, California, USA) was added to the line-up during this period. Originally titled simply Dish, they were forced to extend that name when they discovered the rights to it were already held by a group from the east coast of America. They switched instead to Dishwalla, a name taken from a magazine article about satellite-dish pirates in rural India.
