Gibson Brothers
The Gibson Brothers are a twenty-first century link to the bluegrass tradition of fraternal singing duos. Eric and Leigh Gibson were raised outside Ellenburg Depot in upstate New York, in sight of the Adirondack Mountains, where their high-lonesome vocal sound was right at home. The Gibsons grew up singing together and picking banjo (Eric) and guitar (Leigh), inspired by artists such as the Stanley Brothers. They put a band together in the early 90s, releasing their debut, Underneath A Harvest Moon, in 1994. The Gibson Brothers released four under-the-radar albums before signing with renowned folk/bluegrass label Sugar Hill Records and issuing Bona Fide in 2003. It was at this point that the duo's career really began to take off. By the time of their third album for Sugar Hill, 2006's Red Letter Day, they were incorporating R&B into their tradition-minded sound, covering Ray Charles and Bobby Womack. As their style progressed and evolved, the Gibsons were not afraid of also incorporating rock, leading off 2008's Iron & Diamonds with a Tom Petty track, and pointing the way forward for further progression. (NB: Not to be confused with the 70s French disco group of the same name.)
