Sprung Monkey
As part of the US mainstream punk explosion of the mid- to late 90s, Sprung Monkey mixed elements of rap and ska to their already explosive sound, often described as a heavier version of Sublime. Originating from San Diego, California, USA, Sprung Monkey was formed in the early 90s by Steve Summers (b. Honolulu, Hawaii, USA; vocals/guitar), Mike Summers (b. Gardena, California, USA; guitar), Frank Melendez (guitar), Ernie Longoria (b. Guadalajara, Mexico; drums), and Pat Kim (bass), although Melendez was replaced after a few shows by William "Chuck" Riley (b. San Diego, California, USA). Taking punk's "do it yourself' ethic to extreme levels (selling over 30,000 CDs out of their car trunks), the quintet released two independently issued albums (1993's Situation Life and 1995"s Swirl), before signing on with a major label, Hollywood Records. Their 1998 Hollywood debut, Mr. Funny Face, which featured new bass player Tony Delocht (b. La Mesa, California, USA), managed to spawn a sizeable MTV hit, "Get 'Em Outta Here', and earned them a large following in Australia, but failed to break the band in their homeland. The quintet returned to independent label status for their fourth album, 2001"s Get A Taste. Sprung Monkey's high energy music has appeared in numerous surf, skate, and snowboarding videos over the years, while the band has toured as part of the Van's Warped Tour, and alongside Unwritten Law, P.O.D., Kottonmouth Kings, the Offspring, and Blink-182, among others.
