The Muffs
Based in Los Angeles, California, this US punk band was formed in 1991 by Kim Shattuck (vocals) and Melanie Vammen (guitar), both refugees from all-female garage rockers the Pandoras. Ronnie Barnett (bass) and Criss Crass (drums) completed the original line-up, which completed a highly enjoyable punk pop collection for Warner Brothers Records in 1993. Vammen and Crass left after the debut album, with Jim Laspesa and then Roy McDonald coming in on drums. The slimmed-down trio completed two solid albums for Reprise Records in the late 90s, but despite their songs cropping on several movie soundtracks the Muffs failed to make the breakthrough to mainstream recognition enjoyed by contemporaries such as Green Day. They switched to independent label status in the new millennium, recording Hamburger (2000) for Sympathy For The Record Industry and Really Really Happy (2004) for Five Foot Two.
