Nottingham, England-based quartet founded in 1989, and originally comprising Jonathan "JS" Clayden (vocals), Jonathan "JA" Carter (guitar/programming), Stuart Toolin (guitar) and Mark "MD" Clayden (bass). Formerly known as Scurf, in early 1991 they signed to Peaceville Records and launched their career with the release of Industrial. Among those impressed with the band's visceral guitar assault (at that time featuring no drummer) was disc jockey John Peel, who invited them to perform three tracks on his show in May 1991. Moving over to Earache Records, they recorded their debut for the label in January of the following year, with the Submit mini-album. By this time Toolin had departed and the band had recruited percussionist, "D' Walters. For its full-length follow-up the band increased the ratio of technology, though its application remained studiously intense. The lyrics built on the themes of oppression and social injustice, while the use of samplers and sequencers offered an extra aural dimension. Touring with Treponem Pal, Consolidated, Neurosis and Biohazard ensued, and this musical melting pot produced the germ of an idea within the band. The resultant The Remix Wars saw the band revisiting their back catalogue, and allowing access to other sympathetic hands, including Therapy?, Biohazard and rappers Gunshot. Infotainment? ferociously merged the band's hardcore roots with contemporary drum 'n' bass rhythms, although the band remained true to their political ideals by including free samples at the end of the CD and encouraging their fans to steal them. Ex-Prodigy guitarist Jim Davies joined prior to the recording of 1998"s www.pitchshifter.com, the band's first release on Geffen Records. Two further studio albums appeared in the new millennium before the band announced they were embarking on an extended hiatus.
