Adam F
b. 8 February 1972, Liverpool, England. As the son of glam-rock star Alvin Stardust, and with a self-confessed predilection for jazz fusion, Adam F was an unlikely drum 'n' bass prospect. From 1995, and in a scene dominated by clubs and their DJs, he was one of the first to crystallise the sound of drum 'n' bass on record; less combative than Goldie and less smitten with jazz than Roni Size, both fellow pioneers. Despite his outsider status, the quality of his early releases on the Lucky Spin and Section 5 labels earned the respect of the scene's crucial figures, featuring in the sets of Fabio and LTJ Bukem. Indeed, Adam F's most realised work to date, "Metropolis', emerged on Goldie's Metalheadz label in 1996. Brutal and nightmarish, it was acclaimed as a seminal work in the development of the genre, and captured the 1996/7 Muzik Award for Best Drum 'N' Bass tune. Aided by the muscle of EMI Records, 1997"s Colours brought together his earlier outings and two Top 30 singles "Circles" and "Music In My Mind". Earning a MOBO award, the debut included stylised forays into hip-hop and ambient, enlisted peers such as Roni Size and Grooverider, and vocalist Tracey Thorn. Although the vocodered effects of "Music In My Mind" grated and the occasional moment was uninspired, the deftness of touch evident on "Aromatherapy" and the infectious "Circles" juxtaposed with the ferocity of "Metropolis" confirmed Adam F's versatility. He subsequently spent time with Beenie Man in Jamaica and Redman, LL Cool J and De La Soul in the USA, resulting in the highly adventurous hip-hop set Kaos: The Anti-Acoustic Warfare. The recording of the album was also filmed for a documentary.
