Mr. Big
With their name taken from an album track by the disbanded Free, Jeff Dicken (vocals), Pete Crowther (guitar), Robert Hirschman (bass) and John Burnip (drums) attempted to fill this market void by ploughing a hard rock furrow with a similar blues-derived stalk. On stage, hirsute Dicken's tight-trousered gyrations ensured a healthy cluster of fans round the central microphone as the group garnered a grassroots following on the British and European club circuit, and an EMI Records contract, in 1975. More touring ensured that their two albums sold well without actually making the charts, though the second spawned the singles "Romeo" and "Feel Like Calling Home" which reached the UK Top 40. By 1977, Burnip had been replaced by Vincent Chaulk and then John Marter, and Crowther was replaced by Edward Carter. Despite enriching their sound on record with keyboards, the group were categorized as another outmoded "heavy" act as they drowned in the rip-tide of punk.
