Mimi Fox
b. c.1956, New York City, New York, USA. Starting out playing drums, at the age of 10 Fox began playing guitar on which instrument she was at first influenced by Michael Nesmith, then the Beatles. She continued to play drums in a school jazz band and meanwhile diverse influences on her guitar playing included classicist Julian Bream. She was turned on to contemporary jazz through hearing John Coltrane's Giant Steps. In 1979 she moved to California where she heard and then studied with Bruce Forman. It was also during this period that Fox's interest in bop developed, first on drums, which she later dropped to concentrate on guitar. The studying with Forman was primarily advisory and to a considerable extent Fox maintained her autodidactic methods, transcribing guitar parts from records in order to get inside and thoroughly understand them.
