b. 30 July 1958, Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Mahogany studied music as a child and at the age of 12 played baritone saxophone in Eddie Baker's New Breed Jazz Orchestra while studying in Kansas City. He sang in a choir while in high school and entered and won a church singing scholarship open to baritone singers, not saxophonists. While studying at Baker University he formed a jazz choir. Later, after postgraduate studies, he began singing in Midwestern towns with a trio and was eventually heard by a producer who signed him to Enja Records. The Baronial Baritone, as he was dubbed by jazz writer Whitney Balliett, has a rich melodic voice, singing standards with eloquent ease. His debut for Warner Brothers Records, 1996's Kevin Mahogany, concentrated on pop standards to the annoyance of some jazz purists. However, Mahogany's bold versions of songs such as Stevie Wonder's "I Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer", the Fats Domino standard "I'm Walkin'", and the soul standard "The Dark End Of The Street", demonstrated that he is one of the finest jazz singers of his generation.
