Richard Chamberlain
b. George Richard Chamberlain, 31 March 1935, Los Angeles, California, USA. The well-known television and film star had a brief spell as a successful recording artist in the early 60s. In 1960, after serving in Korea and attending the LA Conservatory of Music, he had his first television role in Gunsmoke and appeared in the film The Secret Of The Purple Reef. In 1961 he landed the lead role in the television series Dr. Kildare, which made the photogenic fresh-faced actor a top pin-up on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1962, his first single, a vocal version of the television series' theme song, "Three Stars Will Shine Tonight", became the first of four UK and three US Top 40 singles for the pleasant-voiced MOR/pop singer. His debut album, Richard Chamberlain Sings, on which he was accompanied by David Rose's 40-piece orchestra, also shot into the transatlantic Top 10s. Chamberlain, who at the height of his career as Dr. Kildare was reputedly receiving 2,500 letters a day, quickly faded from the pop scene but has gone on to star in many more television programmes and films. In 1993 he starred on Broadway as Henry Higgins in a drastically revised revival of the classic musical My Fair Lady.
