Brownstone
Urban R&B trio Brownstone were formed in Los Angeles, California, USA, by Nicci (b. Nicole Gilbert, 8 June 1970, Detroit, Michigan, USA), Maxee (b. Charmayne Maxwell, 11 January 1969, Guyana) and Mimi (b. Monica Doby, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA). Signed after performing a cappella at their audition, the trio became the first act on the Epic-distributed MJJ Music label. Their debut album featured the Grammy-nominated Top 10 single "If You Love Me", and led to a prestigious support slot on Boyz II Men's 1995 US tour. Despite a personnel change when Kina (b. Kina Cosper, Detroit, Michigan, USA) replaced Mimi in June 1995, their growing reputation led to further tours with Anita Baker, BLACKstreet and Patti Labelle. Recorded over the course of a busy year, Still Climbing featured the same successful blend of hip-hop grooves and vocal harmonies that characterized their platinum-selling debut. All three members were working on solo projects by the end of the 90s.
