The Limeliters
The Limeliters were one of the popular forces behind the 50s folk revival in America. The group comprised Lou Gottleib (b. 10 October 1923, Los Angeles, California, USA, d. 11 July 1996, Sebastopol, California, USA; bass), Alex Hassilev (b. 11 July 1932, Paris, France; guitar/banjo/vocals) and Glenn Yarbrough (b. 12 January 1930, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA; guitar/vocals). They formed in Los Angeles in 1959 and took their name from a club, run by Hassilev and Yarbrough, called The Limelite in Aspen, Colorado, USA. Gottleib was a Doctor of Musicology, having studied under the Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg, and had previously sung with the Gateway Singers. The group had a minor hit with "A Dollar Down" in April 1961 on RCA Records, but their albums sold better than singles. Many of their albums were live recordings, including the popular Tonight: In Person, which reached number 5 in the US charts in 1961. The follow-up, The Limeliters, narrowly reached the Top 40 the same year. A third release, The Slightly Fabulous Limeliters made the US Top 10, also in 1961. A series of albums followed, with Sing Out! making the US Top 20 in 1962. Gradually their popularity waned, and when Yarbrough left in November 1963 to pursue a solo career, the group replaced him with Ernie Sheldon. In 1965, Yarbrough, also with RCA, reached the Top 40 in the US album charts with "Baby The Rain Must Fall". The title track, taken from a film of the same title, made the Top 20 the same year. In the late 80s Yarbrough re-formed the Limeliters with new members
