City High
This US urban trio was the first act to be signed to Jerry Duplessis and Wyclef Jean's Booga Basement label. The one woman/two man line-up and their cool fusion of contemporary hip-hop and R&B styles inevitably drew comparisons to the Fugees. The Willigsboro, New Jersey-based crew was originally formed by established producer/songwriters Robby Pardlo (b. USA) and Ryan Toby (b. USA), with singer Claudette Ortiz (b. USA) brought on board at the suggestion of Duplessis and Jean. The trio enjoyed national success with the gripping morality tale "What Would You Do?", which had originally gained widespread exposure on the Life soundtrack. By spring 2001, the track had broken into the US Top 10. Their excellent self-titled debut was released shortly afterwards. A version of the track "Caramel" featuring rapper Eve reached the US Top 20. The trio then decided to put City High on indefinite hiatus. Ortiz later appeared on a number of Wyclef singles and released a number of mixtape only solo tracks.
