The originators of baroque pop, the Left Banke came together in mid-1960s New York City. They were masterminded by teenage prodigy keyboardist/songwriter Michael Brown, and produced by Brown's father, violinist Harry Lookofsky. Their huge 1966 hit, "Walk Away Renee," typified their sound: British Invasion-influenced pop with elegant, classically influenced arrangements (Brown's harpsichord was a key element) and production. They only stayed together for a couple of years, but their pioneering sound was an enormous influence on subsequent decades of baroque poppers. Every psych-pop ensemble that ever adorned a song with a harpsichord owes a debt to the Left Banke.
