Laura Nyro
Criminally underrated (perhaps because her songs were hits for ultra-commercial acts like the 5th Dimension), Nyro was one of the true innovators of '60s pop, a singer-songwriter who merged jazz, gospel, R&B and girl-group pop and created an ouevre that was both highly sophisticated and instantly accessible.

there have been few musical prophets and virtuosos, but laura nyro (sadly, dead from ovarian cancer aft she finally had the child she always wanted), from new york who later lived in CA, not only sang, but she wrote practically ALL her own lyrics, sung them as lead while she played her piano, solo, sung almost all her own backgrounds, engineered and blended her songs, unfortunately never received the respect and popularity, including da $$$, that was rightfully hers. not many knew of laura herself--all they knew were her songs, done by blood, sweat and tears (including al kooper, another master) sing "one child born," and those that the fifth dimension made famous, such as "stoned soul picnic." her dad was a new york saxaphonist, but i knew nothing about her mother. if only i had followed my gut, approached her, and written her biography, more of us would now appreciate her. just try (ha!) to find the beautiful, quiet, gentle song, "upstairs by a china lamp," which preceed "spanish harlem," flowing into it... you won't find it except on LP, simply because hardly anyone ever came to appreciate laura. her death is our loss.
