Laura Love
b. 1960, Omaha, Nebraska, USA. Singer-songwriter Laura Love was born to mixed-race parents in Omaha, the daughter of Preston Love (sideman to Count Basie, Lucky Millinder and Johnny Otis) though she did not meet her father until she was 16. Preston also led his own band which at various times included Love's mother Winnie Winston as lead vocalist. However, Winston suffered from depression and was frequently institutionalised, meaning Love and her sister spent much of their youth in foster homes and orphanages. Her first group was the US blues grunge band Boom GI. During her time with them she was accused of singing misogynist and racist lyrics by a writer for Rolling Stone. Love took Gillian Garr's words to heart and enrolled at the University of Washington to study race, gender and psychology. As a direct consequence of those courses, she began writing her own lyrics and formed her own band, a three-piece led by Love on bass and vocals.
