Kurupt
b. Ricardo Brown, 23 November 1972, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. This gangsta rapper was raised in Philadelphia but moved to California in his teens. Kurupt soon began to make a name for himself on the local music scene, collaborating with Snoop Dogg and signing with Death Row Records at the start of the 90s. Now known as Kurupt, he appeared on two classic Death Row releases, Dr. Dre's The Chronic and Dogg's Doggystyle. He then teamed up with fellow Death Row rapper Dat Nigga Daz aka Daz Dillinger (b. Delmar Arnaud) to form Tha Dogg Pound. The duo released the million-selling Dogg Food in 1995, but work on a second album eventually ground to a halt as they branched out into solo projects. Kurupt set up his own Antra label, distributed by A&M Records, and released his 1998 debut, Kuruption! Shortly before the release of the follow-up, Tha Streetz Is A Mutha, Kurupt's bodyguard was fatally shot in front of the Los Angeles studio where the rapper was recording. The violent lyrics and hardcore beats on the ensuing album created a disturbing artistic parallel with the incident. The rapper's third album, 2001's Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey, featured guest appearances from Fred Durst and DJ Lethal of Limp Bizkit. Kurupt also works with Killah Priest, Ras Kass and Canibus in Hrsmn.
