Kodo
An ensemble specializing in traditional Japanese drumming techniques, Kodo became a successful international export during the mid-90s. Ibuki, released in 1997, was their tenth album, and was promoted with appearances on syndicated US television, including The David Letterman Show. The group also appeared live at Carnegie Hall, New York, and became one of the most popular world music acts to emerge from the Orient. Indeed, from their base on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan, the group now divides its time into three parts - the first part of the year touring America and Europe, the second in Japan, and the remainder at home, working on new material. Comprising 19 members, Kodo practise "taiko", the ancient Japanese martial drumming style, with the ritualistic percussion accentuated by the use of chanting and flute. Since forming in 1981 the group has performed over 2,000 concerts in five continents, collaborating with artists including Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, fusion maestro Bill Laswell (who produced Ibuki) and jazz drummer Max Roach. Group member Eiichi Saito explained the meaning of the term "Kodo" to Billboard magazine in 1997: "The drum is a primordial expression of the human spirit - and it's in all cultures. When I play, I can feel a connection with people from Minneapolis or London."
