Kevin Yost
b Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, USA. A highly regarded US musician and DJ/producer in the deep house field, Yost's individual blend of jazz and house can be attributed to his musical upbringing, where he was introduced to jazz music at an early age. He took up DJing in his teens, concentrating initially on 80s electronica, while studying music at performing arts school. In the 90s, Yost began to experiment with acid jazz styles, blending these with house on his first remix, Envelop's "Hear My Answer", for the New Jersey-based i! Recordings. Two singles for Chicago-based Guidance Records followed, then his first full release for i!, Night Of A Thousand Drums. Part of this EP was the excellent "One Starry Night', where the Yost trademark of a languid guitar improvisation can be clearly heard over a warm, and mellow rhythm section. Two more EPs followed, then 1999"s long-player One Starry Night. The record was well received by both the US and UK press, and several tracks from it became popular with his fellow DJs. Around this time Yost was in demand as a remixer for artists such as Josh Wink, Everything But The Girl and Eric Clapton, while his own reputation as a DJ continued to grow. Road Less Traveled, reached out into more forward-thinking territory, experimenting with beats in five and seven measures rather than the conventional four. Yost's versatility is emphasised in a couple of quality down-tempo tracks.
