Jennifer Holliday
b. 19 October 1960, Houston, Texas, USA. This powerful vocalist first attracted attention as lead in the Broadway show Your Arms Too Short To Box With God. She is, however, better known for her Tony Award-winning role in the musical Dreamgirls, a thinly disguised adaptation of the Supremes' story, which former member Mary Wilson took as the title of her autobiography. The show's undoubted highlight was Holliday's heart-stopping rendition of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going", one of soul's most emotional, passionate performances. The single's success in 1982 prompted Holliday's solo career, but subsequent work was overshadowed by that first hit. She returned to the stage in 1985 in Sing, Mahalia Sing and acted in the television series The Love Boat. Holliday was also part of the backing choir on Foreigner's 1984 UK number 1 hit single, "I Wanna Know What Love Is". Say You Love Me won her a second Grammy award in 1985. She appeared in the musical Grease in the 90s and has recorded only sporadically. Holliday possesses an outstandingly powerful and emotional voice, the range of which has seen her compared to Aretha Franklin.
