Janis Siegel
b. 23 July 1952, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA. Siegel made her name as a member of vocal group the Manhattan Transfer. Drawing her inspiration from artists such as Aretha Franklin, the Four Tops and the Temptations, and with a liking for gospel and modern jazz stars such as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and Pharoah Sanders, Siegel blended in comfortably with her musical companions despite their individual musical inspirations coming from other areas. Indeed, this diversity is clearly one of the reasons for Manhattan Transfer's durability, and that the singers had hit upon a successful formula was proven beyond any doubt when 1997 found them still going strong and celebrating their silver jubilee with Swing. In addition to singing with the group, Siegel also composed and arranged. She has also made some solo albums, teaming up very pleasingly for Short Stories and Slow Hot Wind with pianist Fred Hersch. Siegel's solo voice, uncluttered with mannerisms, and limpidly cool delivery makes her an attractive singer in her own right.
