Jan & Dean
Although they will always be associated with surf music of the early '60s, Jan Berry and Dean Torrence had chart success in 1959, a few years before the Beach Boys came together. But it was their first hit, "Surf City," that put them on the map. Jan & Dean had a number of hit records until 1966, when a car crash left Jan Berry with severe brain damage. He eventually was able to sing and play again, but the duo was never able to reach its early heights.
