System 7
Electronica duo featuring Miquette Giraudy (b. 9 February 1953, Nice, France; synthesizer/sampler) and the more celebrated Steve Hillage (b. Stephen Simpson Hillage, 2 August 1951, Walthamstow, London, England; guitar/sampler). Giraudy is a former film maker from the south of France, where she met up with Hillage's band, the cult synth prog-rockers Gong. Her films had included More and La Vallee, both of which featured Pink Floyd on their soundtracks. Fascinated by synthesizers, she became a self-taught musician and in the current format writes most of the material before Hillage adds a layer of guitar work. Hillage already enjoyed his own cult following through his work with Kevin Ayers, Gong and the Steve Hillage Group, before becoming enveloped in the ambient house explosion of the late 80s/early 90s via the work of Spooky, the Drum Club, Orbital, Black Dog Productions and Fluke, and collaborating with another listening favourite, the Orb. In turn System 7, who up until 1996 were known as 777 in America, has been joined on vinyl by a host of rock, pop and dance stars; Alex Paterson (the Orb), Youth (Killing Joke), Mick McNeil (Simple Minds) Paul Oakenfold, Carl Craig and Derrick May.
