This theatrical rock act was formed by Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell (b. Perry Bernstein, 29 March 1959, Queens, New York City, New York, USA) in 1992, following the demise of his previous act. Enlisting former bandmate Stephen Perkins (b. 13 September 1967, Los Angeles, California, USA; drums), and new recruits Martyn LeNoble (b. 14 April 1969, Vlaardingen, Netherlands; bass), and Peter DiStefano (b. 10 July 1965, Los Angeles, California, USA; guitar), Farrell began developing his new band's direction during their low-key live debut on the Lollapalooza II second stage. With Farrell's creative input and Perkins' rhythmic talents, similarities between Porno For Pyros and Jane's Addiction's recorded output were inevitable, but the subtle shift in musical direction became more obvious in the live setting. Porno For Pyros' shows were closer in character to a carnival, with Farrell as ringmaster, than a traditional rock show, with the band augmented not only by Matt Hyde's keyboards but also by a cast of dancers and performance artists, from the ballerina pirouetting to "Orgasm", to the sharp contrast of the fire-breathing stripper who appeared during "Porno For Pyros". The band subsequently headlined at the 1993 UK Reading Festival in spectacular fashion, and appeared at the Woodstock Anniversary show in 1994. Farrell had become a real star and great media fodder by the time their breakthrough album, Good God's Urge, was issued. DiStefano was diagnosed as having cancer in October 1996, and the band cancelled all work while he underwent chemotherapy. In 1997, Farrell announced the resurrection of Jane's Addiction for live dates, and not long afterwards it was reported that Porno For Pyros had disbanded.
