Hot Boys
This New Orleans, Louisiana, USA-based outfit comprises four rappers signed to the city's Cash Money Records label, Juvenile (b. Terius Gray, 26 March 1975, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA), B.G. (b. Christopher Dorsey, 3 September 1980, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA), Lil Wayne (b. Dwayne Michael Carter, 27 September 1982, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA) and Young Turk aka Turk (b. Tab Virgil, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA). A "hot boy', one who is made and paid by his wit and skills, was an apt term for Juvenile and B.G. whose solo releases had already established them as leading rappers on the southern hip-hop scene. They were joined by newcomers Lil Wayne and Young Turk on 1997"s Get It How U Live!!, an underground sensation which sold over 400,000 copies in the south and Midwest. The individual southern drawls of each rapper provided the main point of interest as the G-funk backing beats provided by in-house producer Mannie Fresh were indistinguishable from other Cash Money releases. The quartet's follow-up, Guerrilla Warfare, broke into the national Top 5 in August 1999, benefiting from the previous year's national distribution contract between Cash Money and Universal Records. The four demonstrated their mature mastery of the southern "bounce" style on stand-out track, "Shoot 1st", while Young Turk's "Bout Whatever" was the best of the solo outings.
