Helix
Formed in Ontario, Canada, in 1974, the band's original line-up consisted of Brian Vollmer (vocals), Brent Doerner (guitar), Paul Hackman (guitar), Keith Zurbrigg (bass) and Brian Doerner (drums). Together they released Breaking Loose before swapping Brent Doerner and Zurbrigg for Leo Niebudek (guitar) and Mike Vzelac (bass). The resultant White Lace & Black Leather was an improvement on their basic hard rock approach, but again met with a less than enthusiastic reception. However, these releases did serve to attract the attention of Capitol Records, who signed the band and released their third album, No Rest For The Wicked, in 1983. This featured a line-up bolstered by new drummer Greg Hinz (ex-Starchild), while Niebudek had departed to leave Hackman in sole charge of guitars. Widely judged to be their best album, this was a solid collection of rock songs that sold well. Walkin' The Razors Edge, released in 1984, introduced new bassist Daryl Gray. This, their most permanent line-up, went on to record two more albums for Capitol, Long Way To Heaven and Wild In The Streets, which demonstrated a much more commercial songwriting approach. However, they were dropped when neither managed to produce a breakthrough, though sadder still was Hackman's death in a tour-bus accident during 1992.
