Hedningarna
This Swedish dance band were signed to UK record label China Records in the UK. Their musical motifs generally encompassed a feel for traditional folk music as much as new technology. Hedningara translates as "the Heathens", and embraces five people: Anders Stake (string and wind instruments), Bjrn Tollin (string and percussion, programming), Hallbus Totte Mattsson (string), Sanna Kurki-Suoni (vocals), and Tellu Paulasto (vocals). They formed in 1987 when the three male members became disillusioned with the traditional folk music scene and travelled around various Scandinavian museums searching for newer means of expression. Based on historical documents, they constructed their own instruments with which to conduct these experiments. They were joined by their two vocalists after a trip to Finland. The vocalists themselves were conducting research into the musical properties of the former Finnish (now Russian) state of Karelia. The two strands of music sat together well, yet instead of regaling folk audiences with it, a more natural market was found within the world of dance - the energy of their performances reflecting communal club culture more than any personality-led, secular music. In 1992 they were awarded with a Swedish Grammy for Best Folk Music, which came in addition to two consecutive awards as Best Festival Band.
