Barbara Mandrell
Barbara Mandrell , the godmother of the pop-country genre, was one of Nashville's first true multimedia crossover divas. A teenage steel guitar prodigy, Mandrell toured with Patsy Cline, George Jones, and Johnny Cash. After finding success with her sisters Louise and Irlene in the Mandrell Family Band, the Texas native went solo, developing a smooth, soft rock-influenced sound and a sophisticated, modern blond-bombshell image. The resulting string of hits made her one of the biggest stars of the late 1970s. Her upward career trajectory was halted only by a serious automobile accident in 1984. Following her recovery, Mandrell found considerable success as a television actress, and her autobiography spent more than six months on the New York Times bestseller list.
