Hank Dogs
Although the Hank Dogs were one of the finest folk UK bands to emerge in the 90s, the trio had roots in punk rock. Andy Hank Dog (b. Andy Allen; vocals/guitar) had previously played with ex-Sex Pistols members Steve Jones and Paul Cook in the Professionals. The trio also included Allen's ex-wife, Piano Pace (vocals/guitar) and his daughter from a previous relationship, Lily Ramona (vocals/drums). They started out at folk clubs in London, becoming a vital part of the British modern folk scene. In 1998, they went worldwide with their debut, Bareback, overseen by famed folk rock producer Joe Boyd and released on his Hannibal Records label, and performances on both sides of the Atlantic. They had no trouble fitting into the US folk circuit, opening for artists such as Joan Baez. The trio's quiet, haunting sound featured ethereal vocal harmonies and Allen's fluid acoustic finger-picking, which was influenced by UK folk guitarists such as John Renbourn, but also bore strong traces of blues and Celtic music. The follow-up, Half Smile, was released in 2002, with Boyd as executive producer, and continued in much the same vein as its predecessor.
