Urban Dance Squad
A band who deliberately blurred the boundaries between rock, rap and dance music, Amsterdam, Netherlands' Urban Dance Squad was originally formed at the end of 1986 by rapper Rudeboy Remington (b. Patrick Tilon) plus the pseudonymous Magic Stick (b. Michel Schoots; drums), DJ DNA (b. Arjen de Vreede; turntables), Sil (b. Silvano Matadin; bass) and Tres Manos (b. Ren van Barneveld; guitar). Their 1989 debut album for Arista Records, Mental Floss For The Globe, included the hit single "Deeper Shade Of Soul", which peaked at number 21 in the US charts, and was a Top 40 entry in several other countries. Their debut album, with its combination of riveting guitar lines, samples and rapping, was an obvious precursor to 90s crossover acts such as Rage Against The Machine. Their impact on the charts looked to be a fleeting one, however, until they re-emerged in 1994 with an accomplished collection for Virgin Records. For this the band eschewed the sample-heavy style of old, having slimmed down to a quartet with the departure of DNA.
