Paco De Lucia
b. Francisco S nchez G¢mez, 21 December 1947, Algeciras, Cadiz, Spain. De Luc¡a's parents, Luc¡a G¢mez and Antonio S nchez, were artisans although his father played guitar. More significantly, his father had great ambitions for all his sons, in particular in music. De Luc¡a began playing guitar at the age of six, being tutored in flamenco music by his father. His brother, Ram¢n De Algeciras, also became a guitarist; another brother, Pepe De Luc¡a, became a noted flamenco singer. The fourth brother, Antonio, was the only one not to take up music as a career, instead entering linguistics. De Luc¡a made his first public appearance in a 1958 radio broadcast and quickly became widely known for his precocious skills. At 13, he became third guitarist with the distinguished touring troupe, the Classical-Spanish Ballet Company of Jos‚ Greco, visiting the USA. At 14, he won at the International Flamenco Art Contest at Jer‚z de la Frontera. In the mid-60s, now resident in Madrid, he played regularly at a club operated by his father and also made several records, accompanying flamenco singers and also playing jazz with saxophonist Pedro Iturralde.
