Stone Poneys
Formed in 1964, the Stone Poneys are remembered today almost exclusively for the fact that their lead singer was Linda Ronstadt. The unit came together in Tucson, Arizona, USA, and originally consisted of Ronstadt (b. 15 July 1946, Tucson, Arizona, USA), who had performed with a sister and brother as the Three Ronstadts, Bob Kimmel (guitar) and Kenny Edwards (b. 10 February 1946, Santa Monica, California, USA; keyboards, guitar). Moving to Los Angeles in 1965, the band was booked into folk clubs such as the Troubadour. A record offer by Mercury Records was declined (the label had demanded they perform surf music!), and they signed instead with Sidewalk Records, releasing the rare single "So Fine"/"Everybody Has Their Own Ideas". They were next signed to Capitol Records. The band's debut album, a self-titled effort, was unsuccessful in 1966, but a single, "Different Drum', written by future Monkees member Michael Nesmith and taken from the Stone Poneys" Evergreen album, provided them with their breakthrough in late 1967. The single reached number 13 in the USA and the album climbed to number 100. One further single, "Up To My Neck In High Muddy Water", barely made the charts in 1968 and after another Nesmith composition, "Some Of Shelley's Blues", failed to chart, Edwards left the band and Ronstadt began her highly successful solo career.
