The Verve Pipe
Before becoming a viable commercial force in 1996 with their first album for RCA Records, the Verve Pipe had already released two small-scale independent albums on their own LMNO Pop! label. Led by singer, guitarist and songwriter Brian Vander Ark (b. 19 June 1964), the band was formed in East Lansing, Michigan, USA, in the early 90s. Backing Vander Ark were his brother, Brad Vander Ark (bass), Doug Corella (keyboards), Donny Brown (drums) and A.J. Dunning (guitar). The Verve Pipe's commercial potency was based largely on their similarity to a number of modern rock bands, including Live and Pearl Jam. Boosted by the success of the singles "Photograph" and the US Top 5 hit "The Freshman" (although "Cup Of Tea" proved to be a disappointment), sales of Villains a year after its release were sufficient to lift it to number 61 in the Billboard 200. The band supported Kiss and Imperial Teen later in 1996, with Brian Vander Ark attracting increasing praise for his songwriting skills.
