Reef
The members of this UK rock band had played together in several west country-based outfits before several members relocated to London to study music at the West London Institute. Kenwyn House (b. 1 August 1970, Tiverton, Devon, England; guitar), Gary Stringer (b. 18 June 1973, Litchfield, Staffordshire, England; vocals), Dominic Greensmith (b. 2 June 1970, Denby, Derbyshire, England; drums) and Jack Bessant (b. 19 March 1971, Wells, Somerset, England; bass) subsequently formed Naked. After signing to S2, a subsidiary of Sony Records, the band changed their name to Reef. They rose to fame via an advert for the Sony Mini-Disc portable stereo system. This depicted them as a heavy metal band touting for a contract, presenting their self-titled song, "Naked", to an unimpressed A&R man, who throws the offending demo out of the window only for it to be retrieved and played by a passing skateboarder. It falsely gave the impression of them being a US band (the video was filmed in New York). The band were keen not to be seen as a one-song wonder and to this end initially declined to offer "Naked" as a single release, often refusing to play it live. Their first single was "Good Feeling" in March 1995, but when "Naked" was eventually released it climbed to number 11 in the UK charts. Their debut album was also well received and successful, although comparisons to disparate bands such as the Black Crowes and Free were widespread. Produced by George Drakoulias, Glow was the record that put them in the spotlight as a major act, helped by the UK Top 10 chart success of the anthemic singles "Place Your Hands" and "Come Back Brighter". The band returned in April 1999 with the UK Top 5 album, Rides, although little creative development was evident in the band's sound. Getaway suffered from the same problem, although the album's first single, "Set The Record Straight", had the makings of a new rock anthem. The band recorded one further album for S2 before parting company with the label. Greensmith was replaced by new drummer Nathan Curran in early 2003.
