Poe
b. Annie Danielewski, New York City, New York, USA. Before entering the music industry, contemporary singer-songwriter Poe enjoyed a diverse background. The daughter of filmmaker Tad Danielewski, after squatting in Manhattan, New York, she studied at Princeton University and worked as a poet, dancer, musician and model. Her peripatetic existence also led her to spells in Africa, India and Europe, while she derived her stage name for her fondness for writer Edgar Allen Poe. Signed to Atlantic Records by president Paul Fishkin, her 1995 debut distilled these varied experiences with the help of a team of collaborative musicians. It was promoted by the release of promotional single, "Trigger Happy Jack", and also the launch of Poe's personal web site. Several years in the making, her sophomore set, Haunted, was an even more striking recording. Informed both spiritually and literally (through the use of sound clips of his voice as segues between songs) by the memory of her late father, the album was recorded on the singer's computer with the aid of a Pro-Tools digital audio workstation.
