Gina G
Having moved to Melbourne, Australia, in 1987, this female vocalist began work as a DJ in that city's dance clubs. Eventually, she joined the influential dance music outfit, Bass Culture. Signed to Mushroom Records, the group reached the Australian Top 40 with their first single in 1992, which was written and sung by Gina herself. Later she moved to the UK, where she became involved in several projects before recording "Ooh Aah ... Just A Little Bit'. A trite, Euro-pop dance song, it was entered in the Great British Song Contest (a preliminary round preceding the Eurovision Song Contest), and progressed to the final four of the competition before becoming the official British entry. Written by Simon Tauber and Motiv8"s Steve Rodway (previously responsible for remixing Pulp's "Disco 2000" and "Common People", as well as their own hits "Searching For The Golden Eye" and "Break The Chain"), it was released on Warner Brothers Records' dance subsidiary, Eternal, in March 1996 and raced to the top of the UK charts. It also became the first Eurovision song contest entry to be voted Single Of The Week by Melody Maker. Two more irritatingly catchy singles, "I Belong To You" and "Fresh!", made it into the UK Top 10 before the singer's brief moment in the spotlight was over.
