Funki Porcini
b. James Bradell, Oxfordshire, England. Bradell left England at the age of 19 and moved to California, later settling in Italy to run a multi-media business. While there he began recording for Ninja Tune Records as 9 Lazy 9, releasing two singles and the albums Paradise Blown and Electric Lazyland (both 1994) on which he combined hip-hop and funk breakbeats with jazz-influenced sounds. He later assumed the name Funki Porcini and returned to England, where he continued his association with Ninja Tune. His single "Long Road/Poseathon" was released at the beginning of 1995 and was followed by the album Hed Phone Sex in May; the latter was described as "a trip around a bedlam-addled musical sex asylum" and "a lush voyeuristic fantasy". "Long Road" presents a chilled hip-hop groove, melodic dub bass, tinkling piano, sleazy saxophone, sampled voice and various other sounds, to create a lush, abstract texture. "Big Pink Inflatable" (1995) and Love, Pussycats & Carwrecks (1996) pursued Funky Porcini's themes of sex, pornography and voyeurism. Tracks such as "River Of Smack" move away from the hip-hop and drum 'n' bass rhythms of most of the album, creating a dark, psychedelic dirge, underpinned by double bass and shuffling percussion. Funki Porcini has subsequently balanced a busy remixing schedule with his own prolific output, which has included The Ultimately Empty Million Pounds, the Zombie EP, and Fast Asleep. A new 9 Lazy 9 recording, Sweet Jones, surfaced in 2003.
