Frost
b. Arturo Molina Jnr., 31 May 1964, Los Angeles, California, USA. This Mexican-descended 90s rapper was raised on military bases in Guam and Germany, but spent most of his youth in east Los Angeles, where he began writing his first rhymes in 1982. He was initially inducted into the ranks of break-dance crew Uncle Jam's Army, as west coast rap began to accommodate the innovations of the Bronx. He released a number of 12-inch singles during this period as well as competing in "backyard parties". His breakthrough came in 1989 with "La Raza", a single typically demonstrating "Chicano pride". A major force in the establishment of Latin hip hop, Frost (then working as Kid Frost) brought together several other Hispanic rappers for the Latin Alliance project in 1991. This came shortly after the release of his 1990 debut solo set, another important signpost in the development of Latin rap. His blend of Chicano social observation and breakbeats provided him with a considerable audience outside of his own social bracket. He subsequently signed to Virgin, for whom he continued to deploy the intelligence to sample not only from funk's back-catalogue, but also that of the salsa tradition of his own people. However, he received scant commercial recognition for his efforts. In 1995 Frost dropped the prefix Kid ("the kid's a man now") and became Eazy-E's final signing to Ruthless Records. An album, Smile Now, Die Later, and single, "East Side Rendezvous", placed him firmly "back on the block", as one reviewer observed.
