Chalice
In the mid-60s Wayne Armond and Richard Daley, later of Third World, formed a band known as the Hells Angels. The group performed locally in a number of live shows. Succumbing to peer pressure, the duo split and Armond pursued a career in advertising. He devoted his spare time to performing with another band, Time. During his time with the band, they recorded two singles but failed to make any impact. His obvious talents prompted Byron Lee to approach and enrol Armond as part of his band the Dragonaires. A chance meeting with Robi Peart led to a musical partnership and Chalice was formed. The line-up featured Keith Francis, Desi Jones, Trevor Roper, Mikel Wallace (b. Michael Wallace, 6 June 1956, London, England) and Ervin Lloyd. With a diversity of musical talent, each member contributed a different sound, and they notched up a hit initially in a reggae style, "Don't Call Me No Nigger Now". The follow-up single, "I Still Love You", recorded in a soul style, topped the Jamaican charts for 14 weeks. In 1981 they were earmarked as the most spectacular live act in Jamaica following their first appearance at Sunsplash. The group's popularity escalated when they began recording exclusively in a reggae style; "I'm Trying", "Good To Be There" and "Stew Peas" all became massive sellers. Their professionalism and reputation as an experienced live act led to their being frequently selected to support major performers in Jamaica, including the Commodores, the Detroit Spinners and the Four Tops. The group's electric live performances resulted in appearances at the 1982 Reggae Superjam and Reggae Sunsplash. In 1983 international exposure was assured when they stole the show with their third manifestation at the annual Reggae Sunsplash Festival, transmitted globally courtesy of Synergy. The exposure resulted in the band signing to Ariola and undertaking international touring, culminating in a critically acclaimed performance at The Lyceum following in Bob Marley's footsteps. In 1986 they returned to the top of the Jamaican chart with "Revival Time", and three years later, "Pocomania Day" completed the hat-trick. In 1991 the group combined classical music and DJ-style for the hit "Dance Hall Manic", featuring guest appearances from Tiger, Lovindeer and Papa San.
