finetune artist: Remy Zero

This alternative rock outfit was formed in the late 80s in Birmingham, Alabama, USA by Cinjun Tate (vocals/guitar), his brother Shelby (guitar/vocals), Cedric LeMoyne (bass/guitar), Jeffrey Cain (guitar) and Gregory Slay (drums). The Tate's parents had performed in the late 60s as spoken word artists, and built their own home studio that both sons were encouraged to use. Remy Zero would spend hours in this studio working on songs and honing their democratic writing methods. They recorded several demo tapes that brought them to the attention of Geffen Records, and were signed to a major label deal in 1994. Attempting to emulate the atmosphere of the Tate's studio, the band recorded their self-titled debut album at a communal house/studio set-up in Northern California. The album was a highly expressionistic noise-pop collection evoking the sound of UK "shoegazing" pioneers My Bloody Valentine. Another UK outfit, Radiohead, was impressed enough to invite the band on tour. Remy Zero then relocated to a decaying apartment building in Hollywood that was once inhabited by Orson Welles and photographer Man Ray. Inspired by the decadent atmosphere of the Villa Elaine, the band recorded the tracks for their sophomore collection. Villa Elaine, which was fine tuned in Los Angeles and England with producers David Bottrill and Alan Moulder, highlighted the band's hidden melodic gifts, most notably on stand-out tracks "Prophecy" and the gentle, acoustic "Life In Rain".
