Emilia
b. Emilia Rydberg, 5 January 1978, Sweden. A Europop singer described by her label manager as "a nice, clean-cut girl", Emilia has enjoyed multi-platinum success in her native Scandinavia with her innocent brand of wide-eyed, bubblegum pop. She is signed to Universal affiliate label Rodeo Records, run by Lars Anderson, the son of Abba's Stig Anderson. He discovered Emilia, a classical music graduate of the Adolf Frederiks music school in Stockholm, when a member of her former R&B/funk group Ahunda People brought him their demo tape in 1996. He liked the voice, but thought the music was inappropriate for her. The title track of her debut album was released in September 1998 and in less than two weeks achieved platinum sales, staying on top of the Swedish charts for seven weeks. It also proved hugely successful in Norway, Denmark, Austria, England (number 5 in December) and the Low Countries. Emilia, who was studying economics, decided to leave her university course in order to capitalise on her breakthrough.
