Meredith Brooks
b. Oregon City, Oregon, USA. Brooks launched her solo career in the mid-90s after a gap of over eight years from her previous recording efforts. In 1989, she was signed to A&M Records as a member of the Graces, a band she co-founded with Gina Clambotti, later a member of Bruce Springsteen's touring group, and Charlotte Caffey, formerly of the Go-Go's. However, she soon became dissatisfied with life as part of that band. She took a break to marry, and thereafter concentrated on her own writing. She settled into running a restaurant alongside her husband, before meeting her future manager, Laurie Levy, in 1995. He encouraged her to become a full-time professional singer once again. She later explained that her long sabbatical was due to her disenchantment with the hold grunge had over the American music market. The material included on her excellent solo debut, Blurring The Edges, was written alongside a number of collaborators, including close friend Shelley Peiken. Among Peiken's co-credits was "Bitch', the first hit single to be taken from the album. It was also the only song to be produced by Geza X, the legendary Los Angeles punk producer (Dead Kennedys). The other tracks on the album were produced by David Ricketts (ex-David And David, and a veteran of sessions with Sheryl Crow and Toni Childs). Brooks herself played all the guitar parts and fits the bill perfectly alongside 90s female singer-songwriters such as Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow, but with inflections of Rickie Lee Jones also noticeable. Brooks" sophomore collection was introduced by a cover version of Melanie's 1970 hit, "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)".
