Diane Schuur
b. Dianne Joan Schuur, 10 December 1953, Tacoma, Washington, USA. Schuur, one of contemporary jazz's most popular vocalists, was one of GRP Records bestselling artists during her long tenure with the label. Accidentally blinded at birth, she grew up in Auburn, taking to jazz with prodigious enthusiasm, learning Dinah Washington's repertoire at the age of three and four, and listening to her mother's Duke Ellington records and her father at the piano. Astonishingly, she was singing professionally at the age of nine, and began performing her own tunes at 16. In 1975, Schuur won a place in drummer Ed Shaughnessy's big band, and travelled with the group to the Monterey Jazz Festival, where she met and jammed with the great Dizzy Gillespie. Her biggest break, however, came at the same festival four years later, when she was discovered by an enthusiastic Stan Getz, who began to spread the word about Schuur's obvious talent, and even invited her to perform with him at the White House in 1982. Two years later, she was invited back by Nancy Reagan, and the broadcast recording of this concert won her a contract with the GRP label.
