Day One
Originating from the musical powerhouse of Bristol, Avon, England, singer-songwriter Phelim Byrne and multi-instrumentalist Donnie Hardwidge are signed to their fellow Bristolians Massive Attack's label, Melankolic. Byrne's Irish father was a successful folk musician during the 60s and the folk storytelling tradition is present in his vignettes depicting heartbreak, disappointment and his own experiences of life on the dole. His deadpan semi-spoken singing style occasionally borders on rap but the musical influences are diverse ' ranging from hip-hop to jazz, rock and country music. There is a lo-fi quality to the playing and production that evokes Gomez and Badly Drawn Boy. Robert Del Naja (aka 3D) from Massive Attack was impressed enough by their sound to suggest signing them to Melankolic for their debut Ordinary Man. The album was mixed by the Beastie Boys' producer Mario Caldato Jnr. (aka Mario C) and received a warm critical reception upon its release in March 2000.
