Abra Moore
b. 8 June 1969, San Diego, California, USA. Folk-pop artist Moore has established herself as a striking new voice in the alternative singer-songwriter field, alongside acclaimed artists such as Liz Phair and Ani DiFranco. Raised in Hawaii by a musical family, Moore lost her jazz-loving mother at the age of four, a loss she would later articulate to striking effect on the title track of her debut album. She went on to study piano in New York as a teenager, before moving back to Hawaii to attend university. While there she formed the band Poi Dog Pondering with fellow college students, and set off on a haphazard tour where, according to Moore, "we'd set up on campuses all over the country, and would start trying to create a scene that would bring people together." With an ever-changing roster of musicians Poi Dog Pondering went on to release two albums on Columbia Records, but Moore had already decide to pursue a career as a solo artist (although she remains a "floating" member of the band). A temporary move to Europe saw her playing solo club dates in England as well as busking on the streets of Paris, but Moore chose to establish herself in Austin, Texas, recording Sing for the independent label Bohemia Beat. A passionate and eloquent collection, Moore drew praise from critics for her remarkably mature songwriting. Not content to rest on her laurels, she then unveiled a more aggressive approach at live shows, backed by Mitch Watkins (guitar), Chris Maresh (bass) and Chris Searles (drums).
