Wild Orchid
A photogenic, well-groomed female dance pop trio, Wild Orchid immediately confirmed RCA Records' faith in them when their debut single, the lushly-orchestrated ballad, "At Night I Pray", entered the US charts in September 1996. Formed in Los Angeles, California, USA, Wild Orchid comprised Stacy Ferguson (b. 27 March 1975, Hacienda Heights, California, USA), Stefanie Ridel (b. 17 May 1973, USA) and Renee Sandstrom (b. 15 February 1974, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA). Ferguson and Sandstrom were regulars on the television show Kids Incorporated during the 80s. Having teamed up with Ridel in the early 90s, the girls formed Wild Orchid and earned a publishing deal with Sony Music, before signing to RCA in 1995 on the recommendation of A&R executive Ron Fair. Although some may have been deterred by the simple pop charms of "At Night I Pray", their self-titled debut album did reveal some unexpected depth to the group's songwriting. "Talk To Me" reached the Dance Top 10 while the edifying funk of "Supernatural" earned the trio a major R&B hit. Renee Sandstrom's father Bobby Sandstrom was among the set's producers, as well as noted house remixer Junior Vasquez. Oxygen (1998) and Fire (2001) maintained the trio's commercial profile, with the latter generating the US Top 40 hit "Stuttering (Don't Say)". This was to prove the final fling for the original line-up however, with Ferguson taking time out from the music business before joining hip-hop crew the Black-Eyed Peas. Ridel and Sandstrom recorded a new Wild Orchid album, Hypnotic.
