Cibo Matto
This highly original New York, USA-based band were formed by Japanese expatriates Miho Hatori (vocals) and Yuka Honda (keyboards). Honda had gone to New York in the mid-80s, playing with several experimental groups including Brooklyn Funk Essential. Hatori, who arrived in the USA in the early 90s, had originally sung in the Tokyo-based hip-hop band Kimidori. The two women came together in the short-lived punk outfit Leito Lychee, before branching out on their own. Their provocative live act, with the dynamic Hatori screeching, rapping or crooning in front of the stoical Honda, quickly attracted attention. They released a debut mini album on the Japanese label Error Records in 1995, which included two earlier independent 7-inch singles. A deal with Warner Brothers Records quickly followed, and their debut album, featuring additional production input from Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake, appeared in early 1996.
