Chris Connor
b. 8 November 1927, Kansas City, Missouri, USA. After singing publicly while still at school, Connor worked with the bands of Claude Thornhill, where she was a member of the vocal group, the Snowflakes, and Herbie Fields in the late 40s and early 50s. Audibly influenced by Anita O'Day, Connor quickly developed her own recognizable style and built a localized reputation. Having sung in high school with a Kenton-style band it was especially appropriate when June Christy, in 1953, recommended Connor to Stan Kenton as her replacement, after this period her career was much enhanced. She continued singing for the next 40-plus years, working mostly as a soloist and usually with jazz musicians in her backing group. In the late 80s she was to be heard singing in Europe showing a few signs of deterioration in her voice while, stylistically, she was as good as ever. In 1990 she was a featured artist at London's Soho Jazz Festival, and during the remainder of the decade Connor continued to tour on a regular basis. Warm Cool is a definitive anthology of her work.
