Charles Lloyd
A scion of the Memphis blues and R&B scene and a dedicated Coltrane disciple, Charles Lloyd developed his own distinctive tone and smooth phrasing on tenor saxophone. His quartet of the 1960s, which introduced Jack DeJohnette and Keith Jarrett, shared bills with the Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix in the biggest rock venues of the day. At the same time his music struck a deep chord with jazz fans, which led to an unprecedented string of hit jazz albums on Atlantic. For most of the '70s he dropped out of the music scene, but he returned in the '80s and has garnered international acclaim ever since.
