Dougie MacLean
b. 27 September 1954, Dunblane, Scotland. Before he was two years old, MacLean moved to Butterstone, near Dunkeld, Perthshire, and now lives in the old schoolhouse. He was formerly a member of both the Tannahill Weavers and Silly Wizard, and an early Euro-band, Mosaic, in the mid-80s. The latter band's impressive line-up included Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny and M rta Sebesty‚n. MacLean went solo in 1978 and recorded the excellent Caledonia with Alan Roberts. He formed his own label, Dunkeld Records, in 1983 as an outlet for his music and the promotion of other Scottish performers. MacLean had one of his own compositions recorded by Kathy Mattea in 1990, for release on her album. Mattea also appears on backing vocals on Whitewash, on what is perhaps MacLean's classic parting song, "Until We Meet Again". In some ways a departure for MacLean, the highly atmospheric The Search came out of a commision to write and record music for the official Loch Ness Monster Exhibition. MacLean also completed music for a BBC television series, MacGregor Across Scotland, and his album Real Estate won a silver disc in 1988. Whether playing guitar, fiddle, bouzouki or didgeridoo, Dougie MacLean's songs combine a love of tradition with the contemporary. The 1997 release Riof is the most impressive of his recent albums.
